No One Size Belief System Fits All

The urge to purge has deep roots in human culture, and in the U.S., we can look to the Puritan reformers for models of what can happen when some people believe they have answers that apply to everyone – and are willing to impose their beliefs, no matter the costs. Margaret Atwood considered the Puritans when she wrote The Handmaid’s Tale, and Anne Applebaum looked at these religious zealots in her piece, “The New Puritans” for The Atlantic.  Applebaum’s conclusion:

“…if we drive all of the difficult people, the demanding people, and the eccentric people away from the creative professions where they used to thrive, we will become a flatter, duller, less interesting society, a place where manuscripts sit in drawers for fear of arbitrary judgments. The arts, the humanities, and the media will become stiff, predictable, and mediocre. Democratic principles like the rule of law, the right to self-defense, the right to a just trial—even the right to be forgiven—will wither. There will be nothing to do but sit back and wait for the Hawthornes of the future to expose us.”  — Anne Applebaum

I wonder if we’ll ever learn that forcing people to be or see what we want them to be or see, doesn’t work.  It does, however, effectively lead to lots of unnecessary misery.

Mary Trump Explains Fear, Denial and Manipulation

Dr. Mary Trump has a real chance to open up in this thoughtful dialogue on The Chauncey DeVega Show.  The host and his guest touch on the issue of using fear as a weapon to effectively manipulate people into doing incredible things, and explore the denialism we see in American culture today.  Fear and denial are depicted in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and are among the themes we will explore in the upcoming webcast series, “If America Fails?:  The Coming Tyranny.” Thank you, Chauncey DeVega for creating a space large enough for listeners to hear the depth of Mary Trump’s message for the world…and your own….and thank you Dr. Trump, for your willingness and capacity to speak truth.  You are an inspiration!

“Dr. Mary Trump is a clinical psychologist and businesswomen. She is also Donald Trump’s niece…She is the author of the bestselling book Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man. Her new book is The Reckoning: Our Nation’s Trauma and Finding a Way to Heal

“Mary Trump explains why so many Americans are still in deep denial about Donald Trump’s enduring power and his ability to cause destruction and other harm to American society and the world…She warns that such denials and related fantasies about Donald Trump and his fascist movement somehow just ‘disappearing’ or ‘going away’ are a function of naiveté and childish thinking rooted in fear, immaturity, and not reality…Mary Trump also details how white privilege and denial and trauma have all come together in this moment to prevent an effective response to Trumpism, the Jim Crow Republicans, and American fascism more generally…She warns that yes, Donald Trump and his followers do indeed want to physically hurt (and worse) those Americans and others they identify as the enemy…

“Chauncey DeVega explains that America’s political elites on both sides of the aisle knew for a long time that Donald Trump represented an existential threat to American society per the ‘revelations’ in Bob Woodward’s new book Peril – yet, with few exceptions, they chose to be quiet and not warn the American people and the world.” #Mary Trump #Chauncey DeVega #The Reckoning Our Nation’s Trauma and Finding a Way to Heal #Bob Woodward

ABOUT THE HANDMAID’S TALE

“Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values’. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.”  –Hulu

Trump allies are still spreading a dangerous Jan. 6 myth

On Saturday, supporters of former president Donald Trump are holding a rally in Washington, D.C. in support of the Jan. 6 attackers currently detained for their role in that act of domestic terrorism.

The rally sends a clear message: If you commit acts of violence to help Trump, he and his supporters will have your back.

The rally sends a clear message: If you commit acts of violence to help Trump, he and his supporters will have your back. Despite the fact that the event may in fact be relatively small at an estimated 700 attendants, that message and what it represents makes this arguably the most dangerous pro-Trump rally yet.

Saturday’s event, named the “Justice for J6” rally, is organized by a former Trump campaign strategist, Matt Braynard, who has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations by claiming he had proof of 2020 election fraud, predicated upon the false claim that those still being held in custody are political prisoners.

On Thursday, Trump released a statement that read in part, “Our hearts and minds are with the people being persecuted so unfairly relating to the January 6th protest,” insisting as he has before that the prosecutions are political in nature.

Republican war on elections makes casualties of civilian stewards of democracy

This is nothing new — Trump has been leading that crusade for some time, baselessly claiming that the Jan. 6 attackers still behind bars “are being treated unbelievably unfairly. ” He’s also compared their treatment by law enforcement to other groups: “You look at people in prison and nothing happens to Antifa and they burned down cities and killed people.” (The Associated Press has detailed that hundreds of people were prosecuted for crimes arising from last summer’s protests, with an average sentence of 27 months in prison.)

Book Summary by Patricia Bauer: “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood

“Legacy and adaptations…Atwood’s prose is chillingly graphic, evoking the deadening effect that the erasure of sexual desire and free will has on both society and the individual. She maintained that every aspect of her fictional society was drawn from something that existed either currently or in the past somewhere in the world. Notably, the story was partly inspired by Puritanism in New England. The Handmaid’s Tale won the 1985 Governor General’s Literary Award for English-language fiction, and it was shortlisted for the 1986 Booker Prize. The widely discussed book became a staple of literature classes in high schools and universities, though it was also frequently challenged. Its notable adaptations include a 1990 film with a screenplay by Harold Pinter, an opera composed by Poul Ruders that premiered in 2000 in Copenhagen, and a ballet performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 2013. In addition, a well-received television series, for which Atwood served as a consulting producer, debuted on Hulu in 2017. The Testaments, Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, was released in 2019.”

There’s a pretty good summary of the book at the link below.
