We Have Questions

We haven’t seen how Gilead came to be.  The TV show is mainly focused on the struggle of one woman to secure her freedom and regain her daughter – not the wider socio-political struggle. Yet, the societal structure is equally important and contains many alerts and warnings. In what ways did rage play a role in the creation of the new society of Gilead?


What aspects of totalitarianism, authoritarianism and/or fascism do you see in modern America?  How did these issues or events come to be? 

Race & Ethnicity—Status of Blacks and other Ethnic Groups

How are Black people presented in the series, and how do these depictions reflect or differ from the real world?

How does capitalism feed the destruction of democratic agency and render poverty as a weapon – enabling totalitarianism, authoritarianism and fascism?

What class distinctions do you see in the series, including those levels that lead one into a certain status and the different levels in Gilead society?  How do these classes compare to our real world?

In what ways do we see religion changing in modern society, including the relationship between church and state that provides a foundation in reality and in the story?
