"If America Fails?: The Coming Tyranny" ::: Examining "The Handmaid’s Tale". . .the fictional story that explores the real potential of the U.S. as a failed state.
@ASoulAFire @JaniceOCG In 2014 book #WhyIAmAnAtheistWhoBelievesInGod by @Frank_Schaeffer, he wrestles with faith. Frank is live on Thurs., Jan. 27 at 8 pm ET, w/ “If America Fails?” on the TruthWorks Network YouTube channel, for our discussion on gender issues in The Handmaid’s Tale.
To varying degrees, I think it’s common to have internal conflicts about all sorts of things. As my mother, Loga B. Odom, frequently said, “life is not so much black and white, as it is gray.” Certainly a self-aware person like Frank Schaeffer, (Artist, Filmmaker & Author, Fall in Love, Have Children, Stay Put, Save the Planet, Be Happy), wrestles with his own internal conflicts about faith in his 2014 book: Why I Am an Atheist Who Believes in God: How to Give Love, Create Beauty and Find Peace. Perhaps you relate, as well.

“Why I Am an Atheist Who Believes in God,’ is [a] distillation of wisdom.” — Washington Post (June 12, 2014)
“Caught between the beauty of his grandchildren and grief at a friend’s death, Frank Schaeffer finds himself simultaneously believing and not believing—an atheist who prays. In Why I am an Atheist Who Believes in God, Schaeffer wrestles with faith and disbelief sharing his innermost debate with the poignant lyricism only a great writer of literary nonfiction can achieve. Schaeffer writes as an imperfect son, husband and grandfather whose adoration of his family, love and art trumps the ugly theologies of an angry God.” — Publisher
“Frank Schaeffer is a New York Times bestselling author of more than a dozen books. Frank is a survivor of both polio and an evangelical/fundamentalist childhood, an acclaimed writer who overcame severe dyslexia, a home-schooled and self-taught documentary movie director, a feature film director of four low budget Hollywood features Frank has described as ‘pretty terrible.’ He is also an acclaimed author of fiction and nonfiction and an artist with a loyal following of international collectors who own many of his paintings.
“Frank has been a frequent guest on the Rachel Maddow Show on NBC, has appeared on Oprah, been interviewed by Terri Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air and appeared on the Today Show, BBC News and many other media outlets. He is a much sought after speaker and has lectured at a wide range of venues from Harvard’s Kennedy School to the Hammer Museum/UCLA, Princeton University, Riverside Church Cathedral, DePaul University and the Kansas City Public Library.” — FrankSchaeffer.com

@ASoulAFire @JaniceOCG @AtwoodSociety Psychiatrist James C. McIntosh, M.D. @DrJamesCMcInto1 joins Thurs., 2/3/22, 8 pm ET, “If America Fails?” looking at mental health issues in @HandmaidsOnHulu & American culture, on TWN’s YouTube channel. You’re invited! #MentalHealthMatters
Dr. James C. McIntosh, Retired Psychiatrist, Co-Chair and Co-Founder of Committee to End Media Offensive to African People (CEMOTAP), WBAI radio host of the MIND FIELD, and author of The Unauthorized Psychoanalysis of Rudolph Giuliani and The Unauthorized Psychoanalysis of Donald Trump, joins “If America Fails?: The Coming Tyranny” for the Thursday, February 3, 2022, 8 pm ET episode, we are pleased to announce.
This episode focuses our attention on the mental health issues in The Handmaid’s Tale and current American culture – both of which demonstrate many troubling stressors, traumas, challenges and threats.
What does it mean for the mind to be forced into servitude, without control over one’s body?
How is it that so many of the people of the U.S. seemingly went along with demands of the new Gilead regime?
Now that Donald Trump is off of Twitter and out of our faces, what is going on with the people who appear to be Ever Trumpers?
Why are Americans so divided over whom to hold accountable for January 6th, and what would a failure of accountability suggest for our future?
What is additional trauma to the Black community likely to mean – and is there a way to protect ourselves from a coming tyranny?
I am just beginning to think about questions to ask this mental health expert. You can take this time between now and February 3rd to let me know what questions you would like Dr. McIntosh to address. #MentalHealthMatters See you then! — LMO

@ASoulAFire @JaniceOCG #AnEndToAllThings @AtticusBooks is 1st book by @jysexton. Jared Yates Sexton joins premiere of “If America Fails?” Thurs., Jan. 13, 2022, at 8 pm ET, on the TruthWorks Network YouTube channel.
One of the things I love about Prof. Jared Yates Sexton is his beautiful use of language. Not surprising, I suppose, since he teaches Writing and Linguistics at Georgia Southern University-Statesboro. His first book, described below, was An End To All Things, published in 2012.
This expert on threats to democracy, will join “If America Fails?: The Coming Tyranny” on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at 8 pm ET, on the TruthWorks Network YouTube channel, for the premiere! — LMO
“In Jared Yates Sexton’s debut, the stories are small town tales of desperation. The characters are impoverished, lost, and staring deep into the end of things, whether that means their relationships, their way of life, or the world itself. Called ‘shades of Barry Hannah, Raymond Carver, and Breece D’J Pancake,’ the The Portland Book Review declared it ‘the beginning of a long literary career.’” — Publisher

“‘It hasn’t been extraordinary people who have changed the world; rather, it’s been people who have been willing to act and live on faith,’ observes pastor and author Susan Smith. Drawing on biblical, historical, and contemporary stories of what she calls ‘crazy faith,’ this inspirational volume challenges readers to dare to step out and make a difference in the world. Faith is ‘vision fueled by action,’ Smith declares. Follow in the footsteps of those who have earned a place in the Hall of Faith, including Moses, Harriet Tubman, David, Nelson Mandela, Sarah and Abraham, Mother Teresa, Noah, and Mary McLeod Bethune.” — Publisher

@ASoulAFire @JaniceOCG More Than a Method, on film performance, is the 1st book by IAF expert #CynthiaAnnBaron who joins Thurs., 1/20/22, 8 pm, “If America Fails?,” focusing on Cults, Cultures & Religions theme in @HandmaidsOnHulu, on TWN’s YouTube channel.

“Though it is often neglected in cinema scholarship, screen performance is a crucial element in the ideological and emotional impact of films. More Than a Method: Trends and Traditions in Contemporary Film Performance features twelve essays that analyze performance in post-1950s film, addressing distinct questions about the working relationships between actors and directors and discussing the interplay between performance and other cinematic techniques. The authors explain the context for performance analysis as they address an international array of film genres, actors, and directors including Alfred Hitchcock and Gus Van Sant, Robert Bresson, Michelangelo Antonioni, Robert Altman, John Cassavetes, John Sayles, Neil Jordan, Tomàs Gutiérrez Alea, Stanley Kubrick, Jim Carrey, and John Woo.
“More Than a Method provides the reader with a historical perspective on film performance theory and explains the importance and relevance of analyzing acting. The essays are divided into three sections: modernism, neo-naturalism, and postmodern film performance. The authors clearly define terms relating to acting and acting styles and provide brief overviews of the significant themes and predominant visual styles of each director. The volume’s essays share a cohesive focus on the art and craft of acting, each emphasizing performance as it is presented on-screen, challenging the idea that the best (or only) way to categorize performance is by training or working method. Through dynamic and sophisticated analyses of a wide range of acting styles and choices, More Than a Method fills an important gap in today’s film scholarship.” — Publisher

@ASoulAFire @JaniceOCG Enjoy this interview of @jysexton by @PeteDominick & watch premiere of “If America Fails?,” Thurs., Jan. 13, 2022, 8 pm ET, on the TruthWorks Network YouTube channel, when Jared Yates Sexton joins us for a discussion on Democracy & @HandmaidsOnHulu.
In this episode of Stand Up! with Pete Dominick, with “author, writer, historian, podcaster, YouTuber and Professor Jared Yates Sexton,” the two men go deep into several important topics related to the unfolding dystopia some of us are witnessing in the U.S. today. As Sexton generously shares results of his research and family experience, they discuss things like:
Robocop, capitalism and sexlessness in western society;
IFS (Internal Family System) trauma therapy;
Fun facts about Christopher Columbus;
Female vs. Male Leadership;
Climate Change and Democracy;
Conspiracy theories, evangelical white paranoia, and the Satanic Panic;
The January 6th coup attempt and diseased parts of American society;
Critical Race Theory; and
The need to actively engage in politics.
I’ll share a couple of tantalizing quotes, but really recommend you listen to the entire interview between 33:25 and 1:16:20. Then, watch the premiere of “If America Fails?: The Coming Tyranny,” on Thursday, January 13, 2022, 8 pm ET, on the TruthWorks Network YouTube channel, when Jared Yates Sexton joins us for a discussion on Democracy and The Handmaid’s Tale.
“We even see some people who aren’t even engaging in certain relationships based on what their economic need is or economic precarity. I actually think that technology and capitalism have just absolutely…submerged us in an artificial life at this point. I think that is one of the larger problems…that we feel alienated from one another. . .”
— Jared Yates Sexton
From the discussion on Robocop, capitalism and sexlessness in western society:
“I actually think the idea of apps, both in terms of…hookup culture, dating apps, you can even talk about the proliferation of pornography – all of these things are sort of the market and technology being brought into human relationships and human interactions…you actually take a look at some of these dating apps and people are actually, through algorithms, matched whether or not they look on the same level as each other, whether or not their business or their careers match up…a lot of people are necessarily living solitary lives at this point. We even see some people who aren’t even engaging in certain relationships based on what their economic need is or economic precarity. I actually think that technology and capitalism have just absolutely…submerged us in an artificial life at this point. I think that is one of the larger problems…that we feel alienated from one another, we feel at a distance from one another. We’ve been told by everything from the internet to the media…starting with the beginnings, I would say, of Reality TV in the 1990s, basically the egg got cracked open and we looked inside and we saw that we were all competitors, we’re all lying to one another, we’re all trying to get one over on each other, we’re all just waiting to stab the knife in each other’s backs. We’ve basically been told over the past few decades – going back if you want to make the marker Robocop in 1987 – for decades now, starting with Reaganism and hypercapitalism, we’ve been told not to trust anybody, and I mean that’s by design. I think that that has ripples throughout politics, economics, labor, the whole kit and caboodle.” — 38:13 to 40:01 – Jared Yates Sexton
From their chat on Climate Change and Democracy:
“We have a really daunting thing ahead of us, which is we have these democratic problems that are just absolutely pressing. We have a Right who…they’re openly talking about coups. They’re talking about reinstating hierarchical power and moving beyond liberal democracy. On top of that, their main scapegoat are People of Color and immigrants; and what we’ve already seen in terms of forced sterilizations here in my state of Florida – how they treated people at the border – the moment that our borders start shrinking because of floods and fires and scarcity of resources, what we’ve seen so far, and what we’ve experienced so far, it’s only going to escalate in accordance with that.” — 52:35 to 53:21 – Jared Yates Sexton
Sexton never fails to deliver thoughtful, stimulating and eloquent commentary, and his frequent appearances on Stand Up! with Pete Dominick demonstrate this host has what it takes to bring out his best. When we listen to Jared Yates Sexton, we benefit. — LMO
“Jared Yates Sexton is the author of The Man They Wanted Me to Be and The People Are Going to Rise Like the Waters Upon Your Shore. His political writing has appeared in publications including The New York Times, The New Republic, Politico, and Salon.com. Sexton is also the author of [four] collections of fiction and is an associate professor of creative writing at Georgia Southern University.
“From writer and political analyst Jared Yates Sexton comes a journey through the history of the United States, from the nation’s founding to the twenty-first century, which examines and debunks the American myths we’ve always told ourselves.
“In recent years, Americans have faced a deluge of horrifying developments in politics and culture: stolen elections, fascist rallies, families torn apart and locked away. A common refrain erupts at each new atrocity: This isn’t who we are.
“In American Rule, Jared Yates Sexton upends those convenient fictions by laying bare the foundational myths at the heart of our collective American imagination. From the very origins of this nation, Americans in power have abused and subjugated others; enabling that corruption are the many myths of American exceptionalism and steadfast values, which are fed to the public and repeated across generations. Working through each era of American growth and change, Sexton weaves together the origins and perpetuation of these narratives still in the public memory, and the acts we have chosen to forget.
“Stirring, deeply researched, and disturbingly familiar, American Rule is a call to examine our own misconceptions of what it means, and has always meant, to be an American.
