A writer has to write, and Rev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith regularly conveys her thoughts and deep questions to the world as Candid Observations “Observations of what we do not want to see . . . .”

There’s lots we don’t want to see!

In November, for example, on Kyle Rittenhouse she wrote:

“We knew from the spirit of that trial. We knew because of the rancidly racist spirit of this country that Rittenhouse would get off.”

On Ahmaud Arbery:

“When we as Black people have yet another one of these cases floating around, the years of internalized trauma caused both by racialized violence and a lack of justice take their toll. The stress is almost unbearable, as is the pre-verdict anxiety. We pray- certainly we pray because that is all we have been able to do as we challenge the systemic injustice of this country which is a part of ‘who we are’ in spite of people saying that the history of our racial rot and the stench from it is not who we are. We pray, but we wonder about the presence of God. We, like Gideon about whom we read in the Hebrew scriptures, wonder where God is and to the statement that some will offer that ‘God is good,’ we lean toward asking God to clarify what God’s ‘goodness’ looks like for Black people.”

On racism among American Christians:

“Despite using the name ‘Christian’ in their goings-on, the truth is nothing that many of these people practice and ascribe to is in alignment with what Jesus the Christ taught. Jesus’ strength, or a big part of it, was his capacity to include and embrace all people. His message was that God wanted community, not chaos, and that all people were worthy of being in community. Racism and the support of white supremacy – which includes not only racism but sexism as well – was not a part of his message, not a part of the ‘Good News,’ so when I hear rabid racists declare that they are Christian, my very soul recoils. The late Rev. CT Vivian said it best, ‘You cannot be a racist and be a Christian.’”

“But this fight is exhausting. White people want a civil war; I would guess that many want Black people – and all of the immigrants of color whom they do not like – to be put ‘in their place’ and thus, ‘Make America great again.’ We as Black people move and live knowing that there is no entity that protects us – not the police, not the lawmakers (who are actually lawbreakers), and certainly not the courts. We move and love knowing that the only peg on which to hang our hope is the belief that Jesus the Christ hears us and will continue to strengthen us. Our refusal to run and crumble will only feed the rabid anger and resentment of white people, whose privilege is not enough to make them whole.”

On God:

“…I cannot stop wondering where God is!!! God wants community, not confusion. God wants us to love each other, not lynch each other, verbally, physically, or politically.  Right?”

See “Part 4 – Hiding the Evidence” of The Boston Globe’s “Future-Proofing the Presidency”

@ASoulAFire @JaniceOCG Editors of @BostonGlobe offer ideas on how the country can increase its capacity to hold a lawless chief executive accountable.  We can do this!  Watch Thursdays, 8 pm ET, 1/13 – 4/7/22, “If America Fails?:  The Coming Tyranny” on TWN.

Why should average Americans care if the POTUS is able to get away with “high crimes and misdemeanors?”

After all, the many crimes for which “the former guy” has been accused, didn’t necessarily change the day-to-day realities of our lives.  In a “boys will be boys” sort of way, we were able to look past much of what we saw, with disinterest or, perhaps, assurance, that if the crimes were serious enough, someone with authority would make sure justice was served.  Moreover, we’ve become used to presidents breaking laws, especially on an international level, and must believe somewhere deep inside, that crimes against other nation-states are only committed in the best interests of the United States.  Or perhaps we feel powerless as citizens to exert control over a powerful president.

Yet crimes we commit on foreign soil can also be applied domestically – and getting away with small crimes surely offers encouragement to take greater risks.  Morally and ethically, we shouldn’t wait until something affects us personally, before seeking justice – for by that point, we may have no tools to mount our own case.  I wish we knew more about how Gilead came to be in The Handmaid’s Tale – but surely it began with turning a blind eye to small crimes, until the criminals had gained enough power to overcome the state.

We should care about the criminality of the president, because we have no way of knowing how far he will go if left unchecked.

Editors of The Boston Globe do not believe the president should be above the law, (and I agree with them).  In the attached article, they offer suggestions on how the country can increase its capacity to hold a lawless chief executive accountable.  — LMO

Here are a few excerpts:

“Donald Trump got away with thwarting investigations of wrongdoing by his campaign and his White House. Without reforms, future criminals could exploit the powers of the presidency to even more dangerous ends…

“This was just one of several instances of obstruction of justice outlined in the Mueller report — the culmination of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s involvement in Russia’s election interference. Trump also obstructed justice when he tried to fire Mueller, when he tried to curtail Mueller, and when he ordered his White House counsel to lie about his attempt to fire Mueller. But having faced no legal consequences for these and other attempts to undermine the investigation, Trump unsurprisingly went on to commit the same crime again, and was eventually impeached for obstruction of Congress in a completely different case that involved his efforts to thwart the investigation of a whistle-blower complaint about his corrupt call to the president of Ukraine.

“…Trump’s shamelessness and resilience in riding out both of his impeachment trials until the Senate acquitted him may be a lesson to his successors to double down on their wrongdoings because their own party will protect them.

“The solution to preventing presidential abuse of power lies in improving the accountability of the president under the law, outside the scope of impeachment, which should be Congress’s last resort. Four things should be done to accomplish that:

  • “First, Congress should strengthen whistle-blower protections…
  • “Second, Congress must strengthen its oversight over the presidency in tangible ways. That means being able to more effectively enforce Congress’s subpoena power…
  • “Third, President Biden should appoint a White House ethics czar…to ensure that the White House correctly implements and abides by high ethical standards…
  • “Lastly, the Department of Justice should revisit its policy, issued by the Office of Legal Counsel, that a sitting president cannot be indicted…”  — The Editorial Board, The Boston Globe

Dr. Ruth Ben-Ghiat Explored Fascist Racial and Labor Policies in 2015 Book – “Italian Fascism’s Empire Cinema”

@JaniceOCG #ItalianFascismsEmpireCinema by @ruthbenghiat & @IUPress offers window to fascist racial & labor policies. Dr. Ruth Ben-Ghiat is live, Thurs., Feb. 10 at 8 pm ET, w/ “If America Fails?” on TWN, for chat on race & ethnicity in @HandmaidsOnHulu & relationship to current challenges to democracy.

Dr. Ruth Ben-Ghiat explored fascist racial and labor policies in her 2015 book – Italian Fascism’s Empire Cinema, published by Indiana University Press.  I suspect Americans have a general sense of major aspects of Germany’s fascist experience, but know less about how fascism was practiced in Italy, and the impact this had on ethnic groups in Libya, Somalia, and Ethiopia.  Thankfully, Dr. Ben-Ghiat has made Italian fascism a central focus of her scholarship – and we now have an historical record to draw on in imagining what could happen in a new fascist-era in the U.S.

  1. What were some of the racial and labor policies of fascists during the Mussolini era?
  2. What was striking to you about the ‘empire films’ that led you to write the book Italian Fascism’s Empire Cinema?
  3. What do you see as the role of film in the way humans behave in real life, if any?
  4. What happened to African people during Mussolini’s reign?

Let’s study the “cinema of dictatorship” and see what old tricks are being deployed in new ways.  These are a few questions we can pose to Dr. Ben-Ghiat when she joins “If America Fails?”  As always, please let us know the burning questions on your mind.  — LMO

“Ruth Ben-Ghiat provides the first in-depth study of feature and documentary films produced under the auspices of Mussolini’s government that took as their subjects or settings Italy’s African and Balkan colonies. These ‘empire films’ were Italy’s entry into an international market for the exotic. The films engaged its most experienced and cosmopolitan directors (Augusto Genina, Mario Camerini) as well as new filmmakers (Roberto Rossellini) who would make their marks in the postwar years. Ben-Ghiat sees these films as part of the aesthetic development that would lead to neo-realism. Shot in Libya, Somalia, and Ethiopia, these movies reinforced Fascist racial and labor policies and were largely forgotten after the war. Ben-Ghiat restores them to Italian and international film history in this gripping account of empire, war, and the cinema of dictatorship.”  — Publisher

“IF AMERICA FAILS?:  The Coming Tyranny,” is a real-world exploration of a fictional story.  A new totalitarian society is created in the dystopian world of The Handmaid’s Tale.  It resonates, frighteningly, with the dramatic efforts happening in the United States today—to suppress voting rights, limit a woman’s right to choose, criminalize free speech, distort education, rewrite history, and other threats taking place in the country now.  Our Black voice collaborative considers the themes presented by the universally-focused web series, from our own perspective—relating them to real-life current events—and warns, the time to fight fascism is NOW!

Meeting of America – A Talk Strategy for Saving Democracy

@ASoulAFire @JaniceOCG Diverse collab w/ @karenhunter @AndrewShue @ThePeopleOrg @dosomething @ListenFirstProj & major corps seeks to heal America with talk strategy to bridge divides. Keep trying! Watch Thursdays, 8 pm ET, 1/13 – 4/7/22, “If America Fails?:  The Coming Tyranny” on TWN.

Last November, Meeting of America planned a series of discussions as a way of getting at the deep divisions in America and working toward saving democracy.  I can’t tell if this project ever got off the ground – but it’s aims were ambitious, and I can imagine many ways in which plans may have been undermined.

Nevertheless, it struck me as an interesting concept when I heard about it a couple of months ago – bringing Americans together to talk.

History teaches us “the people, united, can never be defeated,” and that “divide and conquer” strategies have very effectively derailed plans to advance agenda beneficial for the masses.  So anyone who wants to bring people together, in baby steps, to begin to break patterns that lead to defeat, is quite likely on the right path.

Once we are clear democracy is at risk of collapsing, under pressure from forces who very narrowly pursue their own interests, a question arises about what to do next.  I think there are many ways of answering such a question.  A “Meeting of America” may not be your idea of how to proceed in addressing current threats – and that’s OK.  We can’t all do the same things.  Yet if we all do some things, moving in the same direction, surely we will succeed at reaching our goals.

So whether or not this particular project succeeds, I applaud @AndrewShue for seeking a path that bridges divides and helps to heal America.  Keep trying!  — LMO

Quote from "On Tyranny," by Dr. Timothy Snyder
Quote from “On Tyranny,” by Dr. Timothy Snyder

“Meeting of America is designed to convene millions of Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs to turn down the heat and find a way forward together.

“Before the virtual doors open to all Americans, you’re invited to be in the first group, part of testing and shaping the experience for the rest of the country, a pioneer on this urgent mission.

“Your three conversations will align to the goals of Meeting of America:

  1. Connect with each other to see individual humanity across differences, extracting some of the poison out of polarization (Nov 1-12)
  • Commit to America’s founding yet unfulfilled ideals and other values that bind us together, building a shared identity and foundation for the future (Nov 13 – Dec 5)
  • Champion the New Commitment in our daily lives and volunteer to collaboratively address areas of shared concern (Dec 6-17)

— Karen Hunter Show

“We’re breaking apart. The way we demonize each other across differences is a grave threat to our families, communities, and country.  Let’s reverse the trend!  These bold conversations can create a new foundation of trust and grace upon which we can solve problems and achieve a more perfect union, together.

Meeting of America has been co-created by a strikingly diverse group of everyday Americans and leaders from the business, education, and civic sectors. Pilot Partners include McDonald’s, Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Petco, Boston Beer, Chipotle, The Harley-Davidson Foundation, Duke University, Stanford University, American University, Liberty University, University of Georgia, University of Oklahoma, University of Southern California, Points of Light, Urban League, League of Women Voters, Service Year Alliance and many more. I love the name of Dr. Ruth Ben-Ghiat’s newsletter and video blog – Lucid – and her commitment to helping Americans get clear about what’s happening to our democracy.  She could take her knowledge of history and authoritarianism and pursue more esoteric goals – but realizes our species rises or falls together, and is using her expertise to push us toward life.

We have some choices to make, folks.

Will we choose governance patterns that have benefitted a few, but led to mass death and destruction for the many in previous eras; or will we allow the needs, desires and voices of the majority to rule the world – and preserve life?

The few?  The many?

Whether we are clear or not about the role we play in choosing humanity’s direction, it is truly up to us.  Democracy is not easy.  It requires us to wake up, smell the coffee, and get busy figuring out the best ways to use our energies.  Democracy demands we make difficult choices on complicated matters about which we may hold no expertise.  The lure of the autocratic leader, who pats us on the head and tells us everything will be all right, is great.  Yet history shows us what he means by that reassuring touch—everything will be all right for the few.  For the many, not so much.

The few?  The many?

So, let’s get clear.  Let’s get lucid.  Let’s write a new story for humanity – one that protects Mother Earth and all the life she sustains.  — LMO

  2. What are the challenges mental health professionals face in attempting to protect the public from deranged individuals?
  3. What are the risks to the public when high office holders have uncontrolled mental health issues?

Although many felt that the horror of 9/11 in 2001 rescued Rudolph Giuliani from plummeting polls and elevated him to the status of hero. Dr. McIntosh said that 9/11 lowered him to the status of zero. Is Giuliani fit for to serve as the President of the United States. See “The God Trilogy: Nonfiction,” by Frank Schaeffer

@ASoulAFire @JaniceOCG See #TheGodTrilogy nonfiction set by @Frank_Schaeffer & watch him live, Thurs., Jan. 27 at 8 pm ET, w/ “If America Fails?” on TWN, for chat on gender issues in @HandmaidsOnHulu.

From fiction to nonfiction, and books to film, Frank Schaeffer finds ways to grapple with the conditioning of his upbringing – and observing his struggle from a distance, makes it clear just how difficult it is to control the ideas we were programmed with during our formative years – particularly when we reach a “crisis of faith.”  From my perspective, the world would be on the road to becoming a better place, if more of us experienced this kind of crisis.  Faith has ruled human beings for many centuries, and implanted some very strange and deadly ideas along the way – together with more positive ethical concepts.  It’s been a mixed bag!  Beyond that, it’s not clear how well human societies could function without faith.  When you consider our human tendencies to act on instinct, it may be a good thing that the impulses of some are curbed by their sense of morality.

Frank’s nonfiction trilogy about growing up Schaeffer, includes these titles:

  • Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back (2007)
  • Patience with God: Faith for People Who Don’t Like Religion (2009)
  • Sex, Mom, and God: How the Bible’s Strange Take on Sex Led to Crazy Politics–and How I Learned to Love (2011)

Reading about these books makes me wonder about the psychological and spiritual harm being done to the children of Gilead.  Let’s chat with Frank about things like this:

  1. What are some of the “truth claims that reek of false certainties” you see in the “New Atheists” or  “self-anointed Brights?”
  2. You coined a phrase in Patience with God, “The Church of Hopeful Uncertainty,” and I am wondering what you mean by this expression.
  3. In Sex, Mom, and God you consider what the “paranoid fantasies of the ‘right-wing echo chamber’” are really all about.  How does sex factor into current conspiracy theories, if at all?

See you soon!

Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back,” by Frank Schaeffer | Carroll & Graf (October 5, 2007)

“By the time he was nineteen, Frank Schaeffer’s parents, Francis and Edith Schaeffer, had achieved global fame as bestselling evangelical authors and speakers, and Frank had joined his father on the evangelical circuit. He would go on to speak before thousands in arenas around America, publish his own evangelical bestseller, and work with such figures as Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and Dr. James Dobson. But all the while Schaeffer felt increasingly alienated, precipitating a crisis of faith that would ultimately lead to his departure—even if it meant losing everything. With honesty, empathy, and humor, Schaeffer delivers ‘a brave and important book’ (Andre Dubus III, author of House of Sand and Fog)—both a fascinating insider’s look at the American evangelical movement and a deeply affecting personal odyssey of faith.”  — The Publisher

“Interesting glimpses into the burgeoning religious right folded into a deeply personal memoir…Schaeffer is brutally honest…He offers particularly eye-opening accounts of his personal encounters with the likes of Pat Robertson, James Dobson et al…Candid, sometimes angry and clearly cathartic for the author.”  — Kirkus Reviews on Crazy for God

“A story about the dangers of inauthentic faith…An important book…A cautionary tale about the damaging effects on children whose parents have an excess of spiritual pride.”  — Washington Times on Crazy for God

Patience with God: Faith for People Who Don’t Like Religion,” by Frank Schaeffer| Da Capo Press; 2nd Printing edition (October 27, 2009)

“Frank Schaeffer has a problem with Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, Dennett, and the rest of the New Atheists—the self-anointed ‘Brights.’ He also has a problem with the Rick Warrens and Tim LaHayes of the world. The problem is that he doesn’t see much of a difference between the two camps. As Schaeffer puts it, they ‘often share the same fallacy: truth claims that reek of false certainties. I believe that there is an alternative that actually matches the way life is lived rather than how we usually talk about belief.’ Sparing no one and nothing, including himself and his fiery evangelical past, and invoking subtleties too easily ignored by the pontificators, Schaeffer adds much-needed nuance to the conversation. ‘My writing has smoked out so many individuals who seem to be thinking about the same questions. I hope that this book will provide a meeting place for us, the scattered refugees of what I’ll call The Church of Hopeful Uncertainty.’”   — The Publisher

Sex, Mom, and God: How the Bible’s Strange Take on Sex Led to Crazy Politics–and How I Learned to Love Women (and Jesus) Anyway,” by Frank Schaeffer | Da Capo Press; First Edition (May 31, 2011)

“Alternating between laugh-out-loud scenes from his childhood and acidic ruminations on the present state of an America he and his famous fundamentalist parents helped create, bestselling author Frank Schaeffer asks what the Glenn Becks and the Rush Limbaughs and the paranoid fantasies of the ‘right-wing echo chamber’ are really all about. Here’s a hint: sex. The unforgettable central character in Sex, Mom, and God is the author’s far-from-prudish evangelical mother, Edith, who sweetly but bizarrely provides startling juxtapositions of the religious and the sensual throughout Schaeffer’s childhood. She was, says Frank Schaeffer, ‘the greatest illustration of the Divine beauty of Paradox I’ve encountered … a fundamentalist living a double life as a lover of beauty who broke all her own judgmental rules in favor of creativity.’” — The Publisher

“In AG Merrick Garland’s speech on the eve of Jan. 6th he vowed to pursue the perpetrators of the violent attack ‘at any level,’ and promised to ‘follow the facts wherever they lead.’ The investigation into the event that took place just a year ago on the US Capitol is not limited to the more than seven hundred rioters who have already been charged with breaching the Capitol barricades, assaulting Capitol Police Officers, and threatening the lives of members of congress as well as the sitting Vice-President of the United States. And whether or not they were present that day. So, who does he mean? And does that mean potential charges against Donald Trump himself? Robert Costa of the Washington Post joins to talk about all the latest surrounding the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6th attack.”  — Skullduggery
