@JaniceOCG See Modern Acting, 2016 book by #CynthiaAnnBaron. Dr. Cynthia Ann Baron is live, Thurs., Jan. 20 at 8 pm ET, w/ “If America Fails?” on TWN, for our chat on cults, cultures & religion in @HandmaidsOnHulu & other films.

Modern Acting: The Lost Chapter of American Film and Theatre, is a 2016 book by Cynthia Baron, where she considers the differences between modern and method acting, and contributions of women to film and theatre.  This inspires me to ask…

  • In your opinion, how do the women stars in The Handmaid’s Tale stack up as actors?
  • Are they using Modern acting or Method acting in The Handmaid’s Tale – and what’s the difference?

Let’s get all we can from this expert in film and theatre, to gain a deeper understanding of why we are so moved by the story and performances in The Handmaid’s Tale.  — LMO

Crazy Faith Ministries: A Non-Traditional, Action-Oriented Ministry Led by Rev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith

@JaniceOCG Learn about the work of #CrazyFaithMinistries, an action-oriented ministry led by @cassady2euca.  Rev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith is live, Thurs., Jan. 20 at 8 pm ET, w/ “If America Fails?” on TWN, for our chat on cults, cultures & religion in @HandmaidsOnHulu & modern practices.

Question:  What does a “pastor, author and musician interested in the relationship between politics, religion, and race” decide to focus on as a career?

Answer:  Crazy Faith Ministries.

“I believe that church is not a place where you go, it is something you do. I decided this ministry would be about us doing things for other people, with no building, no trustees, no deacons, no formal worship at all — just us.”  — Rev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith

“Crazy Faith Ministries (CFM) is both a non-profit organization and a church dedicated to improving the lives of the ‘least of these’ and teaching the power of ‘crazy faith.’ As a church, we have a traditional worship service from 5 – 6 pm on Sundays at Summit United Methodist Church (82 E 16th Ave). We welcome ALL (in the truest sense of the word) to come worship with us in the black church tradition of music, hymns, scriptures, and the preached word. Rev. Sue believes in liberation theology as well as the teachings of Jesus. With that being said, social justice is our main tenant, and is the focus of the work that we do outside of the church. Social justice means both mercy work and justice work and we do both. The traditional worship service is only a small amount of what we do. The bigger part of our ministry is outreach, as we believe that taking the ‘good news’ to marginalized communities is what truly living the gospel should be about.  — Crazy Faith Ministries

Volunteers assist Crazy Faith Ministries in reaching those in need, with a current focus on the homeless community.  The ministry also pursues social justice objectives including voter education and registration.  “Rev. Sue,” as she is affectionately known, leads a Freedom Choir that sings freedom songs at marches and events throughout the community, spreading the message of social justice through music.

Twenty years into her career as a minister, Rev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith considered turning away from her chosen career.

“’I was so tired, I was so burnt out,’ she said from her home in Columbus, Ohio, where she raised two children while leading a United Church of Christ congregation.  ‘I didn’t know if I wanted to do church or talk about God ever again.’

…So, she resigned as head pastor and entered a period of deep confusion and reflection…Five months after she resigned from her traditional congregation, Dr. Smith started Crazy Faith Ministries, a non-denominational and pointedly non-traditional organization that, for lack of a better description, might be called a ‘distilled’ church,” wrote Kimberly Winston.

In a thoughtful interview, going deep into the background and motivations of Dr. Smith, we learn much about what makes this dynamic leader tick.  Here are a couple of quotes from the article, which I encourage you to read in full:

“I believe that church is not a place where you go, it is something you do. I decided this ministry would be about us doing things for other people, with no building, no trustees, no deacons, no formal worship at all — just us.”

“It’s a way of making a sermon not just words, but action. It makes my soul sing.”

ABOUT THE HANDMAID’S TALE:

“IF AMERICA FAILS?:  The Coming Tyranny,” examines a fictional story to explore the real potential of the U.S. as a failed state.  A new totalitarian society is created in the dystopian world of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”  It resonates, frighteningly, with the dramatic efforts happening in the United States today—to suppress voting rights, limit a woman’s right to choose, criminalize free speech, distort education, rewrite history, and other threats taking place in the country now.  Our Black voice collaborative considers the themes presented by the universally-focused web series, from a Black perspective—relating them to real-life current events—and warns, the time to fight fascism is NOW!

Chokwe Lumumba and India Walton Bring Bold Perspectives to Topics in Governance

Every now and then, it’s good for my soul to listen to people who exude a positive, can-do attitude toward the challenges we face as a species and nation.  Walton and Lumumba are two such people, and I offer this episode as a reminder to us all, that keeping our spirits up, in a time of struggle, is a vital tool in this long-term journey – and, being crystal clear about where we want to go, helps others find their way to the path of a more humane and just world.  — LMO

“With everything going on these days—we’ll spare you the list of existential crises we’re currently living through—now seems like the perfect time to hear from two leaders who have a revolutionary vision of what this country could be.

“Last week, in a special livestream event, Mother Jones reporter and columnist Nathalie Baptiste spoke to two fascinating politicians that may be on the cusp of a national movement. Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba is the youngest-ever mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. India Walton won a historic upset primary against a four-term incumbent and is the Democratic nominee for the mayor of Buffalo, New York.

“They are from two different cities—over 1,000 miles apart—but both of these young Black leaders have put forward progressive agendas that have been called ‘radical.’

“And right now, words like ‘radical’ or ’socialist’ or ‘progessive’ seem to have shifting definitions. For some, those words are interchangeable. So we hear from Mayor Lumumba and Walton directly:  how do they define themselves? What do they consider the biggest obstacle to a robust socialist party in the United States? And this wouldn’t be a conversation during the years of the pandemic without finding out what, if any, guilty-pleasure TV shows are on their watch list. The Forever War Between Good and Evil: Liberationist, Rev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith, Offers “Rest for the Justice Seeking Soul”

@JaniceOCG Long-time friend of #OURCOMMONGROUNDwithJaniceGraham, @cassady2euca offers #RestForTheJusticeSeekingSoulRev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith is live, Thurs., Jan. 20 at 8 pm ET, w/ “If America Fails?” on TWN, for our chat on cults, cultures & religion in @HandmaidsOnHulu & modern practices.

Rest for the Justice-Seeking Soul (2019) is Rev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith’s offer of aid and comfort to battle-weary warriors in the struggle for social and racial justice.  It’s a war with no end in sight that has consumed the energies of humankind for many centuries.  Whether we see it as a war between good and evil, right and wrong, humanity and inhumanity, sanity and insanity, justice and injustice – we are looking at opposing ways of being in the world that go deep beyond the color of our skin and shape of our noses, to the very essence of who we are as a species.  It’s exhausting, I think because in some way, many people appear to be hard-wired to view the world a certain way, while others appear conditioned and programmed into their beliefs.

Facts and logic are no match for deeply ingrained beliefs.  Independent thought is seen as a threat to hegemonic rule, and those who manage to break with long-held and unquestioned traditions, are typically isolated and often crushed.  Most avoid the war as best they can – “going along to get along” – so that the few who dare to challenge the ruling class, soon become embattled and weary – and often gripped by a sense of loneliness.  As we witness the apparent triumph of evil in various skirmishes and battles, we may lose sight of the long “arc of the moral universe” that “bends toward justice” and succumb to defeat.

If we are lucky, along the way we will find the sustenance needed to move forward in a friend like “Rev. Sue.”  Smith is a longtime friend of OUR COMMON GROUND with Janice Graham.  Now she joins “If America Fails?:  The Coming Tyranny,” sharing her knowledge, experience and insight on the ways in which religion can be used to prevent, thwart and remove democratic practices and institutions.  There’s a long history of religion dominating and directing the beliefs and behavior of human beings – and we see some of how this functions through the new regime of The Handmaid’s Tale.  Let us find comfort and strength in the wisdom of Dr. Smith’s spirit, and the armor we need to carry on.

  • How might we know when religious beliefs and commands are being used to uplift communities versus when they are being applied as a means of oppression?
  • How do we know if the cult, culture or religion that has captured our ear is liberating or constraining?
  • What strategies can people use to break free, mentally, from limiting ideas?
  • What are some effective strategies for rejuvenating weary, justice-seeking souls?

Let us know your questions and we’ll pass them along to “Rev. Sue.”  — LMO

“Susan K. Williams Smith is a minister and activist who has been on the front lines of social and racial justice for many years. As she has marched shoulder-to-shoulder to resist systematic oppression, she has heard the same question over and over: ‘How are we going to get through this?’ Rest for the Justice-Seeking Soul was birthed out of those cries.

“Here is a soul-care manual for social justice-seeking believers who stand in constant vigilance against all forms of racial, class, and gender oppression. The fight for justice and equality is an exhausting daily grind—and the work is never over. That’s why it is incumbent upon all who speak and advocate for the less fortunate to practice self-care. You can’t fight when your tank is empty.

“In response to the many calls and emails she has received from friends, clergy, and strangers who are in utter despair and even deep depression, she has created ninety daily devotions to provide a daily spoonful of hope and encouragement, a healing balm to ‘strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees’ (Hebrews 12:12). Lift your gaze upward toward a better future by allowing God to restore harmony and focus in your soul and justice in your community. Our God is bigger than whoever is oppressing you. As the old hymn states, ‘Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.’”  — Publisher

In a spirited, 30-minute interview, Rev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith reflects with Carolyn Harding of GrassRoot Ohio, upon a wide range of topics from:

  • Her path to ministry;
  • Her work with Crazy Faith Ministries;
  • Black Lives Matter Protests vs. January 6th;
  • Poverty and the Modern Poor People’s Campaign; and her
  • Concern, Gratitude and Hope about the future.

Rev. Smith found her way to ministry, reluctantly, by way of an early career in journalism and membership in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, finally accepting the call with Dr. John R. Bryant.  She soon realized that faith, for her, was about much more than what transpires inside buildings.  She decided

“church is not a place you go to.  Church is something you do…You go to where people are in need.”

That’s what she does with her ministry and has found it both heart-wrenching and fulfilling.  She describes, for example, meeting a former NASA mathematician now living homeless on the streets.  “Crazy Faith” is “a way for me to make the scriptures come to light,” she said.  Referring to the negative ideas and limitations that get into our heads, Smith said,

“We are more of the cannot people, than the can people.”

She believes human beings are capable of much more than we believe we can do, and her path illuminates the possibilities.

Smith also expressed anger when describing the differences in treatment for Black Lives Matter protestors and the terrorists who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.  There’s “so much difference between the protests for Black Lives Matter and whatever that was…the majority of the [BLM] protests are peaceful and those protests are a cry for this country, and its government, and its police force, to listen, to hear, and to feel the pain of people, whose people keep getting butchered by police officers over and over and over again, and nobody paying attention to it and nobody caring…and this is a 400-year journey we’ve been on, and so for this false equivalency to be drawn, I am very, very angry…”

In the discussion on poverty and the Poor People’s Campaign led by Rev. Dr. William Barber, Smith asked

“How can a country call itself ‘exceptional’ when it lets so many people suffer?”

She went on to describe the plight of those deemed “essential workers” during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“Poverty” declared Smith, “is a moral issue.  You can’t understand it until you have to live it…”

“If it’s happening in a third world country, we want to get all self-righteous…Worry about human rights in this country.  Worry about it here first – because if we can fix it here, then we can go someplace else.  This false morality that we have – that’s why I do what I do.”

At the top of Smith’s concerns about our country are the efforts of Republicans to suppress the right to vote; but she is grateful that the 2020 presidential election concluded the way that it did – with Joe Biden as the winner.  She sees hope in our capacity to learn how to get better at strengthening our immune system to more effectively do battle with the plagues among us.

“They Are Not Pro Life. They Are Anti-Woman,” Asserted Frank Schaeffer on The ReidOut

@JaniceOCG “And they are not pro-life. They are anti-woman,” said @Frank_Schaeffer on #TheReidOut w/ @JoyAnnReid.  I agree! He apologizes for role in anti-choice. Author Frank Schaeffer is live, Thurs., Jan. 27 at 8 pm ET, w/ “If America Fails?” on TWN, for chat on gender issues in @HandmaidsOnHulu.

“Fall in Love, Have Children, Stay Put, Save the Planet, Be Happy,” by Frank Schaeffer

Frank Schaeffer was on The ReidOut with Joy-Ann Reid recently.  They were discussing his latest book – Fall in Love, Have Children, Stay Put, Save the Planet, Be Happy (2021) – as well as, the origin and true agenda of the “pro-life” movement, and how misogynistic values almost broke his long-term marriage.  This book is Frank’s apology to women for the role he played in the anti-choice movement.

Reid was struggling to make sense of the inconsistency in being “pro-life” when it comes to fetuses, while simultaneously demonstrating no care for living children.  I was struck by the power of Frank’s assertion at the end of the clip, that

“…they are not pro-life.  They are anti-woman.”

The simple truth of this message and the importance of language in how we frame the battles we wage, jumped out at me.

I wonder how evangelical women would have responded years ago when “a woman’s right to choose” was initially under attack, if they understood the “pro-life” movement was actually an “anti-woman” movement.  Would women have so eagerly followed such a movement?  In The Handmaid’s Tale, Serena Joy is a leading proponent of the elimination of women’s rights.  What motivates women to go along with ideas that limit their own freedoms?

Frank is joining “If America Fails?” in the near future, and we anxiously await getting into some of these issues with him.  Join us!  — LMO
