Jared Yates Sexton, the author of American Rule:  How A Nation Conquered the World But Failed Its People, joins the PREMIERE of “If America Fails?:  The Coming Tyranny,” tonight at 8 pm ET, on the TruthWorks Network YouTube channel.

American Rule, published in 2020 by Penguin Random House, “examines and debunks…American myths,” writes the publisher.  This is especially timely given the mythology being weaved before our eyes since the November presidential election.  More than a year after becoming the current POTUS, the legitimacy of the election of Joe Biden is still being examined and challenged in some U.S. states – and among some individual Americans.  We have an opportunity to witness the myth-making process in real-time…and there’s no wonder we have so much disagreement over more historical events and periods.

So there is much to discuss with Professor Jared Yates Sexton.  Here are a few discussion starters inspired by American Rule:

  • Does the book deal at all with questions around race?
  • Inasmuch as race is a “social construct,” how does this foundational myth impact our ability to cope with current threats to democracy?
  • The “collective American imagination” seems very divided and varied these days – as disparate as the number of media sources, and greater than that!  Has the American experiment already failed?
  • How might we effectively challenge threats to collective memory in the face of outright gaslighting, such as we see with attempts to rewrite the events of January 6th?

See you tonight!  — LMO

“From writer and political analyst Jared Yates Sexton comes a journey through the history of the United States, from the nation’s founding to the twenty-first century, which examines and debunks the American myths we’ve always told ourselves.

“In recent years, Americans have faced a deluge of horrifying developments in politics and culture: stolen elections, fascist rallies, families torn apart and locked away. A common refrain erupts at each new atrocity: This isn’t who we are.

“In American Rule, Jared Yates Sexton upends those convenient fictions by laying bare the foundational myths at the heart of our collective American imagination. From the very origins of this nation, Americans in power have abused and subjugated others; enabling that corruption are the many myths of American exceptionalism and steadfast values, which are fed to the public and repeated across generations. Working through each era of American growth and change, Sexton weaves together the origins and perpetuation of these narratives still in the public memory, and the acts we have chosen to forget.

“Stirring, deeply researched, and disturbingly familiar, American Rule is a call to examine our own misconceptions of what it means, and has always meant, to be an American.”  — Publisher

“I didn’t know exactly what I was going to create just that I HAD to create.

“Art has always been a part of my life. Not in the romantic way that we often hear artists discuss their work; I do art—which is, of course, a form of creative expression—because I have to do it. It is my lifeblood. Though I reserve the right to create as the spirit moves, my art tends to focus on things that inspire and move me. Which in most cases has something to do with black folks, social justice, self-determination, nature, and the rawness of our collective humanity. My chief inspiration these days comes straight from the motherland. My best friend convinced me about seven years ago to accompany him to South Africa. I agreed and my life was forever changed. South Africa is the hub of creative expression on the continent in large part because many African artists from poorer countries come to South Africa (the second wealthiest country on the continent) to start their careers. My first trip I nearly emptied my checking account purchasing art; the artists spanned from Zimbabwe, and Kenya to Sudan and Zambia. What was most impressive was the dynamic ways in which color was utilized to convey mood and feeling. This was not only true of portraits, but also of landscapes, nature, and abstract paintings. I had never witnessed such a thing. Indeed, I was so moved by the art I saw and purchased that the first thing I did when I arrived back in the U.S. was go straight to my local art store and buy an easel, paint, and stretched canvases. I didn’t know exactly what I was going to create just that I HAD to create. I haven’t looked back since.  As for materials, I use both acrylics and oils and I occasionally use wood, cloth, and archival paper for mixed media. My new favorite thing is Arches oil paper because of its incredible texture and the way that it accentuates the colors and textures of oil paints on its surface. It is truly breathtaking. My hope is that you will find something in my collection that will inspire and move you as much as it has inspired and moved me.  Thanks in advance for your support!”  — David Ikard

Dr. Cynthia Ann Baron Shares Insight on Declining Movie Theater Industry

@JaniceOCG Film expert #CynthiaAnnBaron offers insight on declining movie theater industry in interview by @EllieBuerk for @toledonews. Dr. Baron is live, Thurs., Jan. 20 at 8 pm ET, w/ “If America Fails?” on TWN, for our chat on cults, cultures & religion in @HandmaidsOnHulu & other films.

A number of factors are contributing to the decline of the movie theater industry, and the pandemic hasn’t helped. Dr. Cynthia Ann Baron offers data on extent of the issues.  See linked article.  — LMO

A few excerpts from linked article:

“…In 1999, movie ticket sales yielded $1.49 billion in revenue, Bowling Green State University film professor Cynthia Ann Baron said. Despite population increases, $1.41 billion was made in 2009 and $1.24 billion in 2019.

“Ms. Baron cited television and streaming services, which are often far less expensive, as reasons for cinemas’ decline. She added that modern work schedules, which are longer and less predictable, have also made it more difficult to attend events with set schedules.

“Ms. Baron said industry experts anticipate AMC Theatres — the leader among cinema circuits in the United States and Canada that, according to Statista, operates over 8,000 screens — will be out of cash by the end of December. Regal Cinemas has closed all of its theaters and Cinemark, which has three locations in the Toledo area, has just $525 million in cash on hand and is burning through $50 million a month, Ms. Baron said.

“The pandemic exacerbated changes already in motion, said Thomas Castillo, another BGSU film professor. He and Ms. Baron noted that Hollywood theaters only served as the dominant space for entertainment briefly, from the 1930s through the 1950s…”  — Ellie Buerk

On Surviving Tyranny: Rev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith Recalls Deep Spirituality of Rev. C.T. Vivian on His Passing in July, 2020

@JaniceOCG Biographer of #CTVivian, @cassady2euca, recalls how spirituality sustained Civil Rights Movement in @Sojourners.  Dr. Smith is live, Thurs., Jan. 20 at 8 pm ET, w/ “If America Fails?” on TWN, for our chat on cults, cultures & religion in @HandmaidsOnHulu & modern practices.

The day after Rev. C.T. Vivian passed on July 17, 2020, Sojourners published an article by Rev. Dr. Susan K. Williams Smith, recalling how his deep spirituality had fueled and sustained the Civil Rights Movement.  Smith had spent many hours with Vivian in interviews about his life for the authorized biography she is writing.

“The Rev. C.T. Vivian was a civil rights leader and ordained pastor who never stopped fighting for justice; throughout his life, he believed that his work was inspired, guided, and sustained by God,” Smith wrote.

The spiritual nature of the movement was clear in the recollections Vivian shared with Smith.  In the article linked below, she wrote,

“what I found so striking in the stories he shared with me was his belief that the movement – and everything that he and others did in it – was spiritual.”

Vivian offered specific examples of incidents where he believed a spiritual element was protecting him and other activists who faced many bodily dangers in the quest for freedom and justice.  Read those stories in the article, “C.T. Vivian Wanted Us to Remember: The Civil Rights Movement Was Deeply Spiritual.”

It leaves me to wonder how we sustain ourselves, without strong faith, in our modern era – and how we might survive…a coming tyranny.  — LMO

Where Are the Children and Why Were They Stolen?

@ASoulAFire @JaniceOCG Slow progress is seen in efforts to reunite families torn apart by zero-tolerance border policy, reports @benfoxatap of @AP.  Watch Thursdays, 8 pm ET, 1/13 – 4/7/22, “If America Fails?:  The Coming Tyranny.”

Families are routinely ripped apart in the supremely dystopian land of Gilead.  The purpose?  To provide children for upper class families to raise as they see fit, particularly those couples unable or unwilling to bear their own babies.

It does sound too horrific to be true, but sadly, we don’t have to look far to find similar action in the modern U.S.  Recall how the Trump administration callously separated the families of asylum seekers arriving at the southern border, supposedly to discourage immigration.  Fortunately, these cruel and unjust acts were so reprehensible and heart-wrenching, they led American citizens to vigorous protest – and the Biden administration is attempting to answer the calls for family reunification.

Is it a case of “too little, too late?”

A year into the new presidency, just 100 children have been returned to their natural families, according to reports.  The article below says “about 350 more reunifications are in process” and “officials believe there are still about 1,150 children whose whereabouts have not been confirmed.”  The AP also reports about “5,500 children were forcibly removed from their parents under Trump,” but the article does not clarify where these children were ultimately placed – with their family of origin, with a new family, in a detention center, or lost.

With all the various kinds of predators our culture producers, it seems possible to me that some of the children “whose whereabouts have not been confirmed,” have been forever claimed by the most ethically and morally depraved among us.  Moreover, what traumas have even the children who are returned to their original families experienced?

Americans showed up in November, 2020, and resoundingly rejected the cruel, inhumane, destructive and irreparable actions of “the former guy.”  The Biden administration has major work to do in attempting to make whole the families severely harmed by the heartlessness of separations.  Tragically, they will lose the battle in some cases, as some damage cannot be undone.

This alone, for me, is enough, to determine that Donald Trump is never allowed to see the light of day, ever again.  Is it enough for you?

No Más,

LMO

A few quotes from the linked article, “U.S. has reunited 100 children taken from parents under Trump” —

“A Biden administration effort to reunite children and parents who were separated under President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance border policy has made increasing progress as it nears the end of its first year…

“President Joe Biden issued an executive order on his first day in office to reunite families that were separated under the Trump administration’s widely condemned practice of forcibly separating families and children at the U.S.-Mexico border to discourage illegal immigration…

“The work of the task force has been complicated by a number of factors, including inadequate or missing records on the separated families, the sheer number of cases and the fact that many parents are in remote Central American communities and were unable to track down their children or get to the United States to retrieve them.”  —Ben Fox, The Associated Press

Read “The Man They Wanted Me to Be: Toxic Masculinity and a Crisis of Our Making” by Jared Yates Sexton

@JaniceOCG #TheManTheyWantedMeToBe by @jysexton & #CounterPointPress explores social consequences of toxic masculinity. Sexton is live Thurs., Jan. 13 at 8 pm ET, w/ IAF on TWN YouTube page, for discussion on democracy in @HandmaidsOnHulu & threats in current American culture.

TruthWorks Network

The “personal and societal dangers of the patriarchy” and consequences for society of toxic masculinity is what The Man They Wanted Me to Be:  Toxic Masculinity and a Crisis of Our Making, is all about, according to the publisher.  This “memoir and cultural analysis” is certainly relevant to the moment in which we find ourselves as a country.

  • What is it about autocratic, strongman leadership that some people seem to find attractive?
  • What fears do Americans have around independent thinking and more democratic forms of leadership?
  • In what ways does the family help shape our orientation to leadership and governance styles – and how can we undo this conditioning?
  • How is toxic masculinity manifesting itself in modern political culture?
  • What are the racial and/or ethnic orientations we receive about leadership and governance resulting from our cultural identities and affiliations?

These are some of the questions I’d like to explore with Jared Yates Sexton.  How about you?  — LMO

“By carefully and soberly examining his own story, Sexton deconstructs American life and gives many examples of how pervasive toxic masculinity is in our culture.” –Henry Rollins, Los Angeles Times

“This book is critically important to our historical moment . . . [C]rackles with intensity and absolutely refuses to allow the reader to look away for even a moment from the blight that toxic masculinity in America has wrought.” –Nicholas Cannariato, NPR

“The author of The People Are Going to Rise Like the Waters Upon Your Shore turns his keen eye to our current crisis of masculinity using his upbringing in rural Indiana to examine the personal and societal dangers of the patriarchy. Based on his provocative and popular New York Times op-ed, The Man They Wanted Me to Be is both memoir and cultural analysis. Jared Yates Sexton alternates between an examination of his working-class upbringing and historical, psychological, and sociological sources that examine the genesis of toxic masculinity and its consequences for society.”  — Publisher
